This is a Hubble Space Telescope image of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, taken on May 17, 1994,
the comet already on its collision course with Jupiter.

In this picture, the 21 fragments of Shoemaker-Levy 9 stretched across 1 million kilometers in space.
