The three pictures at the top shows lightning storms at three different locations on Jupiter. These pictures were taken at night (on Jupiter). These lightning storms happen 50 to 75 kilometers within Jupiter (below the ammonia clouds we can see through.) The second row of pictures were taken 2 minutes after the row at the top.

A temperature map of a large region around Jupiter's Great Red Spot. The Great Red Spot is colder than the surrounding areas. Colder air from lower within Jupiter's atmosphere is brought up within the Great Red Spot.

Ultraviolet light pictures by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope of Jupiter's auroras. The auroras are brilliant curtains of light in Jupiter's upper atmosphere.

Auroras are caused by electrically charged particles that are attracted at high energies toward the north and south magnetic poles on Jupiter. When these particles hit the upper atmosphere, they glow, causing auroras. Auroras on earth are created in the same way.
